I think the one that grates my nerves most is the use of "penultimate" to
mean anything other than "next to last."
You see it a lot with these morons on ESPN who somehow think penultimate means "more than ultimate" or something stupid like that. The ultimate closer is literally the last guy you call on. He's your closer. There is no one else. The penultimate closer would, therefore be, the middle relief pitcher who gets it to your closer -- usually some aging guy trying to finish out his career or a rookie just called up from the minors and hasn't been worked into the rotation yet. At any rate, penultimate does not mean MORE than ultimate, or whatever convoluted meaning these idiots have decided to assign to it.
